The Relationship Between Ankylosing Spondylitis And Crohn's Disease

AS patients usually have antibodies against self-peptides containing the HLA-B27 cross-reacting sequences, thereby making AS an autoimmune disease. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that AS is an autoimmune reactive arthritis following infection of the gut, around the ileo-caecal junction. In type 1 arthropathy 14% of the patients with ulcerative colitis and 10% with Crohn's disease had an acute self-limiting arthropathy, 10-36 months before diagnosis. A further 17% with ulcerative colitis and 14% with Crohn's disease it was present at the time of diagnosis. Remicade, an immune-suppressing drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease, is reported to be responsible for 70 reported cases of tuberculosis (TB) among US patients. These cases, which of at least four of which were fatal, were reported to the Food and Drug Administration.

Ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease are also related to AS but are not directly caused by it. The symptoms are bouts of bloody diarrhea, often followed with fever, weight loss, and an associated peripheral arthritis in some cases. Research studies have identified a gene linked to Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease appears to be caused by a mix of both inherited and environmental factors. TNF is a naturally occurring protein that is involved in causing a wide variety of autoimmune type disorders, which include: rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

People with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis, ankylosing spondylitis, or Crohn's disease often tend have higher levels of TNF. These high levels of TNF-alpha cause inflammation and lead to problems. Another approach involves physiotherapy and postural education to prevent the stiffness and deformities which are the main sequelae occurring in this disease. The use of NSAIDs are considered a non-specific measure, as they could not reverse or even halt the damaging pathological process of the disease. These kinds of arthritic conditions can cause disease and inflammation in the spine, other joints, eyes, skin, mouth, and various organs. Their similarities and tendency to cause inflammation of the spine, these conditions are collectively known as "spondyloarthropathies.".

Used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, Adalimumab was previously approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis. Adalimumab was approved for reducing the signs and symptoms and inducing and maintaining clinical remission in adult patients with moderately-to-severely active Crohn's disease who have had an inadequate response to conventional therapy and for reducing the signs and symptoms and inducing clinical remission.
